Former Boxing Champ Vernon Forrest Murdered In ATL

Wow is 2009 adding up to the worst deaths in recent years??? I just found out
Vernon Forrest, a 38-year-old former boxing champ who rose to fame as the first person to defeat Shane Mosley, was shot to death over the weekend in what Atlanta authorities are calling an attempted robbery.

According to police, Forrest was shot numerous times in the back. There are currently no suspects.

Forrest was named Ring Magazine's 2002 fighter of the year.

The boxer's publicist Kelly Swanson called him a "caring humanitarian who always stood up for what he believed to be the fairness of life."

Beyond being a phenomenon in the ring, the Georgia native was a wonder with children with disabilities too.

"It was truly his calling," Swanson said to the Associated Press. "When he wasn't boxing, this was his full-time job. ... When they would see him, they would just light up, and some of them couldn't even talk. Vernon was very much involved. He'd have some of the kids over to his house on Sundays. They were part of his family."

HBO, which spotlighted many of Forrest's bouts, also put together a piece on the man's charitable work. Here's how we should remember the fallen fighter... R.I.P. you blessed boxing with some of the best fights ever.
